It was once believed that Shedeur Sanders would be amongst the first draft picks, if not the first pick of the 2025 NFL Drafts. Sanders' fall in the draft was unexpected, especially given his impressive college career. In his final season at Colorado, he threw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns, earning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors.
The Cleveland Browns traded up to acquire the 144th overall pick from the Seattle Seahawks, using it to draft Shedeur Sanders. This move came after the Browns had already selected Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round, adding depth to a quarterback room that includes Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett. β
Initially projected as a top-three pick, Sanders' slide to the fifth round had significant financial implications. His rookie contract is expected to be worth around $4 million guaranteed, a stark contrast to the over $45 million he might have secured as a top pick. β
Reports suggest that concerns during pre-draft evaluations, including interviews and team visits, may have contributed to his unexpected draft position.Β
Despite the draft-day drama, Sanders celebrated his selection with family and friends, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. He now joins a competitive quarterback room in Cleveland, aiming to prove himself at the professional level.
