King Isis, is a queer, Black artist, who is redefining the contemporary music landscape with a unique fusion of alternative rock, grunge, R&B, and neo-soul. Rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Oakland, Isis' music is a reflection of the vibrant and diverse environment they were born and raised in. With haunting vocals and a broad range of musical abilities, King Isis crafts songs that resonate with those who exist on the fringes of mainstream culture.
Isis' journey in music is not just a personal exploration but also a continuation of a family legacy. Their great-grandmother, Omega King, was one of Chicago's first Black opera singers to perform on-stage, while silently breaking significant racial barriers in the world of classical music.
I discovered King Isis through a KPIX news story about them. They were the opening act for Tegan and Sara at the Stern Grove Festival. When I heard snippets of their songs used in the segment, I knew I had to delve deeper into their music.
King Isis has released three EPs: #l (2021), scales (2023), and shed (2024). While I love all the tracks on #l, if I had to choose one standout, it would be FANTASEA. From scales, my favorite is 141827 (the only one). However, my absolute favorite song by King Isis so far is NVR RLLY from their latest EP, shed.
I love everything about this artist's music. It is a cathartic and immersive experience. Self-acceptance and empowerment are rampant themes throughout Isis' lyrics. Most of the songs are deeply personal and offers a glimpse into the artist's psyche, making the listening experience both intimate and expansive. Through the lyrics, King Isis invites listeners to embark on a journey of self-discovery, while challenging societal norms and celebrating individuality.
King Isis is not just an artist but a cultural force, pushing the boundaries of genre and identity. Their music is a powerful blend of personal and cultural narratives, creating a space for those who feel marginalized or misunderstood. With each release, King Isis continues to carve out their niche in the music world, making them a vital voice in the contemporary music scene. As they carry forward the legacy of their great-grandmother, they also pave the way for future generations of artists who dare to be different and true to themselves.
