Over the weekend, Tiffany Haddish turned Super King Market in Altadena into a hub of generosity, offering up to $150 worth of groceries per person to survivors of the January Eaton Fire and others in need. The event, announced through local networks and social media, drew a massive crowd. By 11 a.m., an hour before the giveaway officially began, approximately 500 people were already in line.
The rules were simple and fair: participants could select up to five meat items, but alcohol, tobacco, and bulk purchases for resale were off-limits. Haddish was on site greeting attendees, handing out vouchers, and sharing hugs. The atmosphere was warm and personal, with the comedian/actress making clear this wasn’t about publicity, it was about community.
To help cover costs, Haddish reached out to her “rich friends,” a list that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Nia Long, D.L. Hughley, and Kevin Hart (who she joked still hadn’t chipped in). Businessman and gubernatorial candidate Stephen Cloobeck also contributed, using the occasion to call attention to California’s affordability crisis, describing the state as “not affordable, livable, or workable.”
For many, the event was about more than free groceries, it was about feeling seen and supported. Haddish’s approach, centered on kindness and personal connection, turned an ordinary shopping day into a moment of solidarity and hope.
