Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, renowned drummer of The Roots and Oscar-winning director of Summer of Soul, returns with a compelling new documentary: Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius). Premiering on Hulu and Disney+ on 13 February 2025, the film delves into the life and legacy of Sly Stone, the enigmatic frontman of Sly and the Family Stone.
The documentary traces Stone's meteoric rise in the late 1960s and early 1970s, highlighting his innovative fusion of funk, soul, rock, and psychedelia that challenged musical norms and societal boundaries. Featuring insights from artists like André 3000, D'Angelo, Chaka Khan, Q-Tip, Nile Rodgers, and George Clinton, the film offers a multifaceted look at Stone's influence and the pressures he faced as a Black musical genius.
Questlove's narrative doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of Stone's journey, including his battles with addiction and the weight of fame. The film underscores the systemic challenges Black artists often encounter, emphasizing the need to recognize their humanity beyond their artistry.
Complementing the documentary is Stone's memoir, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), released on 17 October 2023, through Questlove's AUWA Books imprint. Co-written with Ben Greenman and featuring a foreword by Questlove, the memoir offers a candid reflection on Stone's life, from his musical innovations to his personal struggles.
Together, the documentary and memoir provide an intimate exploration of Sly Stone's enduring impact on music and culture. For those seeking to understand the complexities of artistic genius and the societal forces that shape it, both works are essential.
Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+, and Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) is available at major bookstores.
